Do You Trust In Your Abilities?
Are we trusting in our ability to succeed or in God’s ability to carry us through? David in all his glory of victory, never trusted in his abilities. He put his trust in God to save him from his enemies.
He says in Ps 44:6-8:
For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.
What about you? Examine your life right now. Where is your focus? Is it on your success? On your skills? On your ability to make money? On your fame? On your accomplishments? Are you trusting in your “bow or sword”, your list of accomplishments? Or are you trusting in God alone?
In 1988, an experienced American skydiver by the name of Ivan McQuire, strapped a video camera onto his helmet to film an instructor training his student how to jump out of an airplane. Ivan, aged 35, was truly an experienced parachutist, and had already done 800 jumps!
As the plane climbed to the desired altitude, Ivan jumped of the plane first and with the camera aimed up towards the plane, he began recording the instructor and student as they jumped and opened their parachutes. But something was drastically wrong. The video showed Ivan's right hand reaching for his parachute release, but it was not there. And then his left hand desperately reached forward. Next, the camera began jerking around violently. The video showed the ground approaching rapidly. And then there was nothing.
Ivan was so preoccupied with his video camera that he forgot to strap on his parachute. It caused his death. The local sheriff at the scene said, "A man who has jumped eight hundred times ought to remember his parachute." Ivan believed that his skill, years of experience and reputation in skydiving would see him through but it was a tragic ending for him.
Trusting solely on our abilities can have tragic consequences. When we are always focus on our abilities, we will soon lose sight of God. Are your skills and abilities capable of solving the anxieties, hurts, and deeper problems of life. When disaster strikes, when the unexpected happens, when all hope seem lost, your skills, accomplishments, and abilities, will account for nothing. So renew your trust in God. Ask him to grant you wisdom to live according to his will. Trust him, just as David did.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.- Pr 3:5-6
Let us strive to do our best and let God do the rest.
I thank you that you are the God of the impossible. You can do anything. I want to trust in your ability and not my own. Teach me to see difficulties in my life from your perspective. Help me to focus on you and your power. I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
In Jesus name,
He who trusts himself is lost. He who trusts in God can do all things. - Alphonsus Liguori
